I was surprised of the lack of literary criticisms of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn despite the novel being popular in its day. You took a unique approach by also analyzing the book Angela’s Ashes because it resembles A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and pointed out that because of the era is was published in it wasn’t as respected as it should have been. You showed that although literature is timeless its success can be limited by the time it was published in. Curiously, this relates to my author, Fyodor Dostoevsky. While his novels such as Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment were popular during the 19th century, his writing faced strict condemnation during the Soviet era in Russia. In my edition of Crime and Punishment the USSR 1953 Outline for the study of Dostoevsky in Soviet Universities represents an anti-Dostoevskian case. Yet despite the condemnation of both of the novels we read, we were still able to read them and enjoy them. Another aspect of your paper was that it pointed out how your novel’s writing style may be simple yet it contains a sharp analysis of the struggles with poverty. This is an important to remember when taking the AP exam because I may be faced with a prompt that I am unable to discern the literary devices. I will remember that the complexities may not lie within the writing style, but they instead lie within the plot. And try to search for the meaning of the work as a whole.
